“Monumental Mosaic of Southern Russia”
When visiting the Black Sea, you have surely seen mosaics on the walls of sanatoriums, bus stops, and cinemas. Created in the years 1950-1980, these mosaics are now rapidly disappearing. This is the result of people not understanding or knowing that they have historical and artistic value.
As part of the project “Monumental Mosaic of Southern Russia,” a photo exhibition dedicated to mosaic art opened on September 19 at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts in Moscow (September 19 - October 20). On September 21, Volgograd will host an encounter with the mosaics of the southern regions (Panorama Museum “Battle of Stalingrad,” Mamaev Kurgan, September 21 - October 30).
The project “Monumental Mosaic of Southern Russia” includes:
1) 8 photo exhibitions in various cities across Russia;
2) an open photo contest for everyone;
3) a book titled “Soviet Monumental Mosaic of Southern Russia. 1937–1991.”
Project authors Nikolai Vasiliev, Igor Bychkov, and Arthur Tokarev inspected over 1000 mosaic compositions from 8 republics, 2 territories, and 3 regions of Southern Russia. At the exhibitions, they will showcase unique images of both existing and lost objects, with a focus on local specifics.
The publisher invites you to explore the remaining masterpieces of monumental Soviet mosaics
